The National Geographic Society is the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organization. Since its founding in 1888, the Society has distributed more than 6,000 research grants, and its responsibility to kids and educators is a natural outcome of its mission: “the increase and diffusion of geographic knowledge.” The National Geographic Society has helped scientists explore planet earth from the night skies to the ocean floor and has supported researchers investigating the origins of plant and animal worlds. Today the Society is propelled by new concerns: the alarming lack of geographic knowledge among our young people and the pressing need to protect the earth’s natural resources. Contributions support the Society’s important work in research, exploration, and geography education.
