TEGALUS

Tegalus is a world of warring superpowers with deep-seated political differences. The two major powers, the Rand Protectorate and the Caledonian Federation, had been locked in a state of cold war for decades. Despite a level of technological development similar to the 1940s and no capability of reaching orbit, each nation controlled enough weapons to wipe the other off the face of the planet. The stargate on Tegalus, known as the Great Ring of Avidan, had been situated in a museum in the Rand Protectorate, and when SG-1 made first contact with the planet, religious fundamentalists interpreted their arrival as a sign that the gods would return to reward the faithful. Under the leadership of the religious zealot, Soren, the fundamentalist movement grew until Rand collapsed in a state of civil war and Caledonia felt its own security was threatened. A first strike by Caledonia led to a military response from Rand, and the planet was plunged into a global war. With SG-1's support, the fundamentalist rebels were defeated, Soren was killed, and the citizens of both nations began to rebuild.

The SGC offered to help the planet rebuild after the war, but the offer was eventually declined as the planet began to fall under the influence of the Ori. Within a year of the missile attacks, the planet was visited by a Prior who brought the Prior plague to the inhabitants of Rand until the people began embracing Origin in exchange for their lives. The Prior also offered schematics of a sophisticated satellite weapon that would guarantee Rand's total domination over the Caledonians. Not everyone approved of the new technology, and Senator Kane sought the assistance of SG-1 to dismantle or disable the satellite, but their attempts failed and President Nadal of the Rand Protectorate ordered the destruction of the Prometheus. In a coup, Commander Pernaux killed Nadal, taking over the presidency of Rand, and Minister Chaska of Caledonia reluctantly accepted a compromise offer in which Caledonians who did not wish to follow Origin would be permitted to leave Tegalus through the stargate and seek refuge on another planet. Negotiations began, but soon afterward the talks broke down, Caledonia launched an attack, and Rand responded in kind. The stargate is presumed buried in the rubble.
