End the Sale of Whale Meat
Dear Richard,

Every Californian who cares about whales should know this: the parent company of California’s Famima!! convenience stores is selling whale meat in Japan. That gives you and other concerned Californians a rare opportunity to help end Japan’s ruthless violation of the international ban on whaling.

Tell Famima!! convenience stores to challenge its parent company’s anti-whale policies.

The International Whaling Commission has banned commercial whaling since 1986. Yet Japan continues to kill whales under the guise of “scientific research” -- even within the boundaries of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary established by the IWC in 1992 to protect whales.

Each year, Japan issues itself “scientific research” quotas to kill some 1,000 minke, fin, sperm, Bryde’s and sei whales in the Antarctic and North Pacific oceans -- much of which then ends up in Japanese supermarkets. Many of these whales were hunted nearly to extinction and are only now rebounding from centuries of overhunting.

By selling whale products, FamilyMart, Famima!!’s parent company, is helping Japan’s efforts to evade the law and kill these intelligent creatures for commercial gain.

Other major retailers -- including Seven-Eleven Japan, the largest convenience store operator in Japan -- have stopped selling whale products.

FamilyMart operates nine Famima!! stores in California. Please call on this retail giant to change its ways as it seeks to expand its global business.

Thank you for helping to end commercial whaling.
