CHULAK

Chulak

Chulak is the name of both the main city and the planet that is a homeworld of the Jaffa. It is a forested world with two suns, over 2000 light years from Earth, and it has had an active stargate for more than 5000 years. The Jaffa who inhabit the planet emulate an Egyptian culture and speak the language of the Goa'uld, a language with derivations similar to ancient Egyptian and Arabic. Chulak is the home planet of Teal'c and his family, and it was the destination of the first SG-1 mission. From Teal'c, SG-1 has learned much about the culture and customs of Chulak. For example, on Chulak, when a great warrior retires from the field of battle, it is customary to sing a song of lament, and when someone dies, it is the custom to not eat for three days and nights. As a homeworld of the Jaffa, Chulak was one of the few worlds in all the galaxy with an abundance of larval Goa'uld.

Chulak had been under the domination of the System Lord Apophis. Following his defeat at the hands of SG-1, however, Chulak endured much unrest and chaos, with uprisings between the surviving personal guard who remained loyal to Apophis, and the growing numbers of Rebel Jaffa who followed Bra'tac. Following the defeat of the Goa'uld and the rise of the Jaffa Nation on Dakara, Chulak remained an important homeworld of free Jaffa. When Gerak attempted to deliver the Jaffa Nation to Origin, those who resisted gathered on Chulak under the leadership of Bra'tac and Teal'c. Ordered by the Prior to use bloodshed and sacrifice to mark Chulak as the last place a Jaffa would ever defy the power of the Ori, Gerak prepared to destroy the unbelievers on Chulak. However, he agreed instead to meet with Teal'c at the site of the Battle of Tazek'Sur, where his father had once been killed in the rebellion against the Goa'uld. There, reminded of his father's legacy, Gerak's change of heart spared the planet. Later, Teal'c returned to Chulak seeking support for the resolution to bring democracy to the Jaffa Nation, however he was kidnapped during his mission by Ba'al, who sought to claim leadership of the Jaffa for himself. For defying the Ori, Chulak remained a target, and the first Ori warships to arrive through the supergate emerged from hyperspace over Chulak. Bra'tac and SG-1 tried unsuccessfully to defend the planet against the superior forces, but a ground incursion was launched, and Chulak was attacked from orbit.
