KATERINA BENNET

Katerina Bennet was the mother of Joey and Frank Bennet. Her husband had been an immigrant from Eastern Europe who became the head of a family crime syndicate involved in drug trafficking. When her husband died, her older son Joey became the head of the family and took over the operation. Katerina had kept her distance from the family business, living her life as if she didn't want to know where the money came from, and she felt especially close to her younger son, Frank, who also sought to break his ties with the business to pursue a career as an architect.

In failing health, Katerina was hospitalized at St. Matthew's Hospital where she was looked after by Nurse Carol. She knew she was dying, and she longed to speak to Frank one last time. Frank, however, had agreed to testify before the Crime Commission about Joey's illegal drug operation, and Joey was determined to prevent that from happening, even if it meant killing his brother. MacGyver, who had been tasked with providing security for Frank, visited Katerina in the hospital and was determined to find a way for Frank to visit his mother.

With the intention of luring his brother, Joey arranged to have his mother discharged from the hospital and moved to his home. Although he knew it was a trap, Frank entered the Bennet compound and was able to visit with his mother. She reassured him that she understood why he had chosen to testify against his brother, acknowledging that he must do what he must. Finally at peace, Katerina Bennet quietly passed away.

After his mother's death, Joey intended to murder his brother, but MacGyver was able to orchestrate a rescue by constructing a rocket-powered harpoon that allowed them to zipline to safety. Frank's testimony would guarantee prison for his brother Joey.
