EAST GERMANY

East Germany

MacGyver had been sent on a routine mission to East Germany, where, in a wooded area about 12 km from the West German border, he was to meet his contact, Jaeger, who would hand over critical information hidden in a shell casing. However, the mission was compromised when a leak within the DXS had put MacGyver at risk, and suddenly he and Jaeger were surrounded by German officers. As a distraction, MacGyver spoke a few phrases of dreadful German, meant to confuse the officers, and he grabbed a bird that Jaeger had hunted, tossing it toward the guard dogs. MacGyver escaped into the woods, but Craig Bannister, MacGyver's friend and coworker, suddenly appeared in a stolen police car to pick him up. Pete Thornton had been concerned about the recent leaks and had sent Bannister in as backup.

As the German officers pursued, their bullets severed the brake line of Bannister's car, leaving the car without brakes. However, MacGyver climbed onto the hood of the car and, as the car careened downhill at 140kph, he repaired the brakes by feeding the power steering fluid into the brake cylinder. Bannister and MacGyver were able to safely escape across the West German border.

While he had been in East Germany, MacGyver had also visited East Berlin. Fritz, the security guard at the Federal Building in Los Angeles, had a sister with whom he had lost contact during the Cold War, and MacGyver made a point of locating her. She gave him a letter and photographs of her children to bring to her brother in America, assuring him that the family was fine. Fritz was overwhelmed with emotion and deeply grateful when MacGyver surprised him by handing him the unexpected letter upon his return.
