ED

Ed

Ed was the pathologist at the Wilshire Memorial Hospital. He had a casual, homey attitude toward his work and a dry sense of humor, joking and using his instruments to snack on eggrolls as he performed an autopsy, and prompting MacGyver to observe, "Ed, you've been down here too long."

Reverend Mather had been a clergyman with an outstanding reputation, but when he addressed the guests at the International Peace Through Science Symposium and inexplicably began firing a gun before suddenly dying, he was brought to Wilshire Memorial Hospital for an autopsy to determine why such a highly respected clergyman would pull out a 9mm handgun and begin shooting at someone whose identity was meant to be top secret, and then suddenly have the world's most convenient heart attack. Ed discovered a blockage of the left inferior artery and determined that the cause of death was cardiac arrest due to an arterial embolism. However, the blockage was a complex mass of fibrous tissue, not cholesterol, and traces of adipic acid were also found in his blood and fatty tissue.

MacGyver asked for a sample of the fibrous material, and even though it was bending the rules, Ed agreed when MacGyver reminded him that he had rebuilt Ed's sound system for him. From the sample, MacGyver was able to conclude that Soviet agents had applied programming techniques to use Mather as an assassin and had introduced adipic acid with hexamethyline diamine into Mather's bloodstream as a failsafe which could be activated by a magnetic field to artificially induce a heart attack in the event that his programming failed.
