In the early years of his career, especially during his tenure on General Hospital, Richard often joined his fellow castmates for public appearances at shopping malls and amusement parks. There he had the opportunity to mingle with fans and answer questions.

In the summer of 1983, Richard and his friend Doug Sheehan had both recently left General Hospital to pursue roles in new prime time dramas. To greet fans and to promote their new shows, they appeared together at the Stratford Square Mall in Bloomington, Illinois. There entertainment reporter Robb Weller conducted an interview in which they reminisced about their time on General Hospital, shared a glimpse into their new roles, and answered questions from the audience.
