LYMAN

Lyman

Lyman was a conductor aboard a train to Rajmir, India. Having just completed a mission in India, MacGyver was anxious to get out of the country quickly, but he had missed his train connection. Instead, he caught up to the train in a speeding taxi and begged to be allowed to board until Batu Das, the engineer, at last agreed to slow down just enough for MacGyver to climb on board while the train was still in motion. Lyman welcomed him aboard and checked his ticket before directing him to the dining car.

Hassan, the leader of a small, impoverished village, had organized his men to hijack the train in order to identify and capture two Western businessmen on board who had sold poisoned medicine to his village that had resulted in 26 deaths. Two of Hassan's men, Badur and his partner, were already on board, and at the appointed signal, they announced that they were taking control of the train. Lyman stepped forward, and as he and Badur struggled for Badur's gun, the weapon fired, and Lyman was seriously wounded. Badur declared that the wound had been an accident, and when two of the passengers, Dr. James Grant and Diana Kingman, insisted that they be permitted to see to the injured man, Badur permitted it. Lyman had lost a lot of blood, and he was weak and in danger of dying, but Grant and Diana were able to keep him somewhat stable during the ordeal.

Hassan's men blew up a trestle bridge, forcing the train to stop, and Hassan announced that all Westerners on board would be held hostage without food or water until they themselves identified the two businessmen and turned them over to face justice. Having secured Hassan's promise that the men would be given a fair trial, MacGyver fashioned a makeshift lie detector using a sphygmomanometer and an alarm clock which revealed that two of the passengers, Paul Webster and Blade, had been responsible for the tainted drugs. Following the incident, as the passengers returned to the train and were allowed to continue their journey, the hope was that Lyman would receive medical attention in time to recover.
