MALP

The MALP (Mobile Analytic Laboratory Probe) is an unmanned, mobile, remote controlled vehicle capable of assessing possible hostile threats, environmental conditions, and the presence of a DHD on a planet before a team is sent through the stargate. The SGC has many such devices, which are used routinely as reconnaissance probes. The MALP replaces the earlier Field Remote Expeditionary Device (FRED) which was primarily a cargo transport. It can be modified to carry cargo, it can be used as a power source, it can be equipped with sensors capable of reading a number of environmental conditions such as temperature, air quality, and radiation, and it can be fitted with radar, a mechanically controlled arm, audio and video communication devices, and even weapons. The MALP maintains contact with the SGC by sending and receiving both audio and visual transmissions bi-directionally through the open wormhole.
