STONE

Stone was a petty criminal, dishonest by preference, a thief and swindler by trade, with several murders to his credit. He had arrived from Hong Kong and owned the Chinese Kitchen restaurant in Chinatown, serving "Fine Chinese Food." Although he used the restaurant to portray himself as a legitimate businessman, he made his money through scams and other criminal activities.

Stone had made the acquaintance of Paul Chan, a 14-year-old boy from Santa Monica who bore a similar backstory and appearance to the Wish Child of Chinese legend. According to legend, if one links his soul to that of the Wish Child, he will be granted immortality. Although most people no longer believed in the legend, there were a few who did, and Stone saw an opportunity to sell the boy for a huge profit. Stone befriended Paul, offered him gifts and promises, and convinced the boy to portray the Wish Child. Paul agreed, believing that Stone was a friend who could be trusted and that their scam was a harmless way to make a lot of money.

Lee Wenying, an elderly Chinese businessman, was among those who believed in the legend, and he sought immortality for himself. He paid Dr. Shen Wei, an expert in the legend, to meet Stone and Paul in Chinatown and to determine the legitimacy of their claim. Dr. Shen produced the Rock of Shin Tze as a test, and when Paul used sleight of hand to deftly switch the rock for a small block bearing the sign of the Wish Child, Dr. Shen was convinced and shared the information with Lee.

Stone and Paul met Lee aboard his freighter, where Lee presented several more tests to verify the identity of the Wish Child. Once convinced, he locked Paul in the forward hold of the ship and presented Stone with his payment, a chest of gold coins worth one million dollars. However, Lee had no intention of leaving any loose ends, and he ordered his associate, Teng, to knock Stone out, tie the chest of gold to his body, and throw him overboard.

MacGyver was able to locate and rescue Paul before the ship set sail, and as they made their escape, Lee suffered an apparently and likely fatal heart attack, leaving Paul free from those who had sought to use him.
