CHINATOWN

Chinatown, a center of Chinese culture in Los Angeles, was also the base of operations for Stone, a criminal, thief, and swindler who hid behind a legitimate restaurant business there. Stone had made the acquaintance of Paul Chan, a 14-year-old boy from Santa Monica who had a similar backstory and appearance to the legendary Wish Child, and he convinced Paul to portray the Wish Child in a scam that would bring them a significant profit.

Lee Wenying, an elderly Chinese businessman who believed that the legendary Wish Child would grant him immortality, hired Dr. Shen Wei, an expert in the study of the Wish Child legend, to meet Stone and Paul in Chinatown and to determine the legitimacy of their claim. There Dr. Shen presented Paul with the Rock of Shin Tze as a test, and when Paul deftly switched the rock for a small block bearing the sign of the Wish Child, his sleight of hand was enough to convince Dr. Shen that the Wish Child had indeed returned in modern times.

Paul's sister Lisa had asked MacGyver to pick up Paul in Chinatown where she believed he was attending a birthday party. However, MacGyver witnessed the ceremony of the Rock of Shin Tze and recognized that Paul was in danger from those who sought to use him. Stone's associate, Ji, knocked MacGyver out and shanghaied him aboard an outbound ship, but when Macgyver escaped, he returned to Chinatown, located Paul, and tried to warn him. Paul assured him that there was no danger, and he willingly returned to Stone, leaving MacGyver to continue his search for Paul through Chinatown.

MacGyver spoke to his friend Sammy, who cautioned him about Stone's scam and directed him to the Golden Era Museum. There he encountered Dr. Shen, who further described the Wish Child legend. However, Lee had no intention of leaving loose ends, and his associate, Teng, tracked Dr. Shen to the museum and shot and killed him, just as Shen uttered with his dying breath the location of Lee's ship where Paul had been taken.
