Family Ties

10.18 Episode 212
Airdate: June 8, 2007

The SGC receives a video transmission from an affable character whom Vala recognizes as her father, Jacek, a charming con artist. Despite Vala's warning that Jacek is not to be trusted, SG-1 agrees to consider his offer of information about Arkad's attack on Earth in exchange for sanctuary. Jacek provides the location of the naquadah loaded cargo ships intended for the attack, and when his intel checks out and the ships are destroyed, Jacek is granted passage to Earth. Despite his promise to strive for a fresh start, Jacek quickly falls back on his old ways, running one con after another, from phone scams to the sale of genuine stardust over the internet.

Vala wants no part of reconciliation with her father, and she insists that she has discarded her happy memories along with the box of trinkets he would bring her as a child. Her suspicions about Jacek appear to be true when he arranges a clandestine meeting with a Jaffa. His intention all along had been to come to Earth, where one of Arkad's cargo ships was already in position, in order to arrange a deal with Arkad's Jaffa to sell the naquadah for a profit. SG-1 intervenes, however, and reluctantly they accept Jacek's help to locate the cloaked ship and to recover it from Arkad's warriors. What Jacek doesn't know, however, is that SG-1 has a scam of their own.

Near the SGC, SG-1 battles the Jaffa guarding the cloaked cargo ship, allowing Jacek to go aboard. He warns that the ship is rigged, and he bids a gentle farewell to his daughter, offering her a necklace in case he doesn't return, before launching and making off in the ship. However, the ship is a decoy, and the real ship with its cargo of naquadah is secured by SG-1. On a distant world, Jacek is left with lead bars and packing peanuts, but true to his nature, he finds a buyer for them as "Jibbaran virility enhancers." Meanwhile, on Earth, his daughter gently places his necklace in the box full of trinkets that she has kept hidden all these years under her bed.

NOTES OF INTEREST

  • Vala was raised by her mother. Her father, Jacek, was absent for the first three years of her life, running scams out of the Nylus sector. Later he would be gone for months at a time only to return to lay low from the people he had swindeled. When she was little, Jacek used to take Vala to Meronat, a little world with two suns, and they once spent an afternoon together on Serras-Dia, running for their lives from the authorities.
  • Jacek attempts to supplement his living expenses from the Air Force with Tuesday and Thursday Bingo with the senior ladies in his building, a charity phone scam for Little Pepito who needs a new set of kidneys, peddling genuine stardust on the internet that will tap into the power of the Alpha Force, the core energy of the universe, for $19.95, and the "Eat for Your Eye Color" diet book. Left with worthless lead bars, he trades the packing peanuts as Jibbaran virility enhancers.
  • Landry was married to his wife Kim for 12 years. It has been a little over 5 years since he and Kim last spoke.
  • Vala is further integrating into Earth society by bonding with Carter for "Girls' Day Out" including pedicures, mochaccinos, and Victoria's Secret.
  • Colonel Davidson is in command of the Odyssey.
  • A cloaked cargo ship can't be detected by an orbital scan.
  • Siler's latest injury: broken nose from walking into an opened door.

MEMORABLE REMARKS

  • Cancelling a series as it celebrates its new season:
They canceled it? Really? I didn't even know the new season had started. [Mitchell]
  • Recognition of Stargate SG-1 by the Sci-Fi Channel:
But the truth is, the Stargate Program just doesn't get the support it used to from the people in charge. [Carter]
    Why not? [Jacek]
    Eureka! [Dr. Lee]
That's too bad, because after all your Stargate Program has accomplished for this network of planets, I would think the decision-makers would show it the respect it deserves. [Jacek]
